OBSERVATION CLASSROOM ENVIROMENT

 DATE: 18.12.2023

GRADE: 2nd, in total: 15 students, 7 boys and 8 girls.

Classroom arrangement: semicircle

This is a public school, which has around 12 hours of English language teaching, as well as other workshops conducted in English, with a total of 3 hours of contact with the language each day. In the classroom the pupils are seated in a semicircle which allows interaction with all the pupils and the teacher. The teacher mentions that, although it did not happen that time, he could change the students' seats if necessary.

This was a grammar lesson using the structure I like and I don't like in relation to food, for which the students already knew the vocabulary of food. after introducing the grammatical structure, activities were carried out where they tested their knowledge. The teacher provide with the material necessary to complete the task and after they complete the course book  by Cambridge, power up 2.

The products made by the pupils could be seen on the classroom wall, the teacher promoted an atmosphere in which everyone could share their work and did not force those who did not want to do so. It is important to recognize that, even before starting the activities, the teacher allowed time for peer and group work, giving way to communication and community building.

Regardless of age or grade level, classroom atmosphere is extremely important. An environment where students feel comfortable and safe is one of the main objectives of teachers, due to the direct relationship it has on their academic performance. Promoting spaces where students can safely express their emotions and be validated will facilitate their learning process.

I personally believe that a student will be more motivated to learn something new when they feel that they are going to a place where they like to be rather than a place they have to go or be, if students have a place where they can express themselves freely without being disqualified, they will feel more motivated to learn.
